In addition to providing discipline/field education to students, educational institutions are also intended to support the psychological development of students. Psychological Counseling and Guidance provide services to support this development. Guidance teachers are primarily responsible for ensuring the environment for the students to develop healthily from mental, psychological and social care. For this purpose, the services that a guidance teacher can provide; to determine the individual characteristics and needs of the students, to identify the problems that exist or may exist in their lives and to provide counseling for them.
The Ministry of National Education has provided more services to Psychological Counseling and Guidance services since the 1950’s. Nowadays, the number of Guidance Teachers and Psychological Counselors approaching 30.000 in our education system is the primary indication given to it. Psychological Counseling is a career in daily life and at school, which is a profession that will be needed for a longer time.
